Consumption of field-realistic doses of a widely used mito-toxic fungicide reduces thorax mass but does not negatively impact flight capacities of the honey bee (Apis mellifera)

چکیده
Commercial beekeepers in many locations are experiencing increased annual colony losses of honey bees (Apis mellifera), but the causes, including role agrochemicals losses, remain unclear. In this study, we investigated effects chronic consumption pollen containing a widely-used fungicide (Pristine®), known to inhibit bee mitochondria vitro, which has recently been shown reduce worker lifespan when field-colonies provided with field-realistic levels Pristine®. We fed field colonies concentration Pristine® (2.3 ppm) and two orders magnitude higher (230 ppm). To challenge flight behavior elicit near-maximal metabolic rate, measured quality rates lower-than-normal air densities. Chronic 230 not 2.3 ppm reduced maximal performance rates, suggesting that observed decrease lifespans workers reared on doses Pristine®-laced is due inhibition muscle mitochondria. However, either or dose thorax mass (but body mass), providing first evidence morphological Pristine®, supporting hypothesis reduces forager longevity by negatively impacting digestive nutritional processes.

1. Oxidative dissimilation has been studied in enzymes from the honey bee. Using mitochondria isolated from the thoraces, complete oxidation of most of the TCA cycle members has been shown. 2. The presence of the acetate-activating enzyme, citrate-condensing enzyme, isocitric dehydrogenase, alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphate, and 6-phosphogluconic dehydrogenase has been demo...

The effects of age and behavioral development on honey bee (Apis mellifera) flight performance.
A critical but seldom-studied component of life history theory is how behavior and age affect whole-organism performance. To address this issue we compared the flight performance of honey bees (whose behavioral development and age can be assessed independently via simple manipulations of colony demographics) between distinct behavioral castes (in-hive nurse bees vs out-of-hive foragers) and acr...
متن کاملAcaricide, Fungicide and Drug Interactions in Honey Bees (Apis mellifera)
BACKGROUND Chemical analysis shows that honey bees (Apis mellifera) and hive products contain many pesticides derived from various sources. The most abundant pesticides are acaricides applied by beekeepers to control Varroa destructor. Beekeepers also apply antimicrobial drugs to control bacterial and microsporidial diseases. Fungicides may enter the hive when applied to nearby flowering crops....
متن کاملDopamine modulation of honey bee (Apis mellifera) antennal-lobe neurons.
Primary olfactory centers [antennal lobes (ALs)] of the honey bee brain are invaded by dopamine (DA)-immunoreactive neurons early in development (pupal stage 3), immediately before a period of rapid growth and compartmentalization of the AL neuropil. Here we examine the modulatory actions of DA on honey bee AL neurons during this period. Voltage-clamp recordings in whole cell configuration were...
